Pros and Cons of Wix website & YELL websites

We have had people approach us about Wix websites they already have, made by Wix or Yell.  Asking why it’s not doing so well on search engine sites.  Asking what we feel about their website.  They asked us to perform our Free Website Healthcheck, to establish what problems does or does not have.

Wix websites has some benefits.  It’s free to setup.  Even their premium websites are pretty cheap, but it doesn’t entail you, the user, creating it on their platform.  So you can put images up, content, menu etc.  You use their themes.  As a “cheap” option, it’s fine.  If you want to ensure it is SEO’d correctly using the right codes and tools (that a developer would do elsewhere), sadly you cannot check this.

Why is that so important?  If your title isn’t added as a “header one” (which to most people actually means very little), then Google won’t recognise the title of the page.  Therefore, it will be “read” badly, and not seen as the page you have written.

As an example:

This is a title about a chest of drawers

This is a simple paragraph about a chest of drawers.

Google reads this, sees the various words, but if that bold title isn’t coded correctly, it won’t read it as “a title”, thus you lose the ranking you wanted for that page.

Wix websites Image Resizing – or lack thereof

We have often come across websites where there is a big banner at the top, and most CMS smart website systems will serve up the image suitable for your device, resizing it.  So if you are on an iPhone 5 for example, that displays images at no greater than 475px wide.  Wix websites doesn’t seem to resize, so if you are upload a 500kb JPG photograph, that is 1920 px wide….. Wix will serve up that 1920px wide image… to an 475px wide browser.

That’s bad!

So should you go for a Wix website?  This all depends on whether you want to rank well with Google.  Whether you want your readers to load up pages quickly.

Our Responsive Websites are in a class of their own.  Fully responsive, images are resized to show the correct size for each screen, menus that are pixel perfect, so they express your company proudly online, and a design that is just stunning.

So what about Yell websites?

Yell is a little different, in that they do charge for them, but cheaply.  Their designs can be quite nice, but their SEO is generally found by us to be shocking.

The problem is, to non-techies, these issues sounds like nothing.  Here is an example:

Every page should have a “Header One” tag.  We have found Yell websites where the homepage (that needs it even more than others it could be argued), has NO Header One tag at all.  So it’s not telling Google what this page is actually about.  We Cut Hair.  We build Bathrooms.  We mow lawns. We Sell Cars.

Google cannot identify what a site is doing, if you don’t actually tell it with the right coding.  Just because the text is there on screen, Google needs to be *told* exactly what you are doing, the right way.

This is what SEO work is all about…

We noticed also that with Yell, while the site does show a mobile “version” it is not actually responsive.

Here’s a simple way to tell.  Open your website in a desktop/laptop browser.  Now bring the side of the browser screen inward to make it narrow – around 2-3 inches wide.  Does your site collapse down while remaining easy to view?  OR is it shooting off the side of the browser, out of view?

Easy to view: Responsive
Out of View: Non-Responsive.

Simple!!

When we create a website, we do it ONLY to be fully responsive.  Even when it means customising certain code to make things even more responsive than a theme allows.  We also ensure all the work in our Spalding studio for SEO, is done with precision, courtesy and respect to the customer.

These platforms have their place.  In our view, only if you really don’t care to much about being found ‘naturally’ on Google.  If you push and pay with Adwords, then they are fine, but even then, are you happy to have a site coded badly?

WordPress websites experts – available for your web site

In recent years, the option to have WordPress websites built using Word Press has become increasingly used, and therefore more popular as well.

It does have its pitfalls, but if you know what you are doing, the results can be astounding.

79DESIGN has developed many responsive web sites using WordPress and their themes.

These themes can be downloaded for free, or more advanced themes purchased, but it comes with issues; if you don’t know what you are doing, it can be really cumbersome, and time-consuming, and a very slow learning curve.

For example, you have your theme… and now what?  How do you get thoses sliders on there, how do you get your brand colouring on there.  If it’s all in green, how do you get all your reds to be in the right places?  This is after you have added your pages, posts and social media.

These are not questions that can be answered and fixed by just anyone, unless you have weeks and weeks for your site to either be a holding page, or worse still, broken, while you sort it.

We always, without fail, put your new web site into a ‘beta’ form, so no user nor particularly Google can find it.  If it finds a web site with no content, no metas, no shorturls in it, it will sting you badly, and lose you so much ranking position, it will take months, maybe years to get it back.  So a beta form is where the site is protected and our of the way of your current ‘working live’ site.

We are experts in styling, specially in WordPress where it really is a minefield of code and data.  What’s the difference between a Post and a Page?  How do you get your menus working correctly and styled right?  How do you get an image on the web site and use it correctly?  Why won’t widgets a) appear on the homepage, but is on all other pages.

By far the biggest problem faced though is the colour styling.  The get your WordPress Site right, the underline colourings, borders, hoverovers etc, all need to be in your brands colouring, else pink and yellow will show, where it should be red and blue.  And trust us, not all colours are set in the “Theme Options”.

Hire a company that knows what they are doing; that has built multiple based and advanced WP Template web sites, and remove the headache you might just get from having a go.

A few examples of our WordPress Websites are:

www.bulldogairsoft.co.uk

Examples of Blogs we have created using WordPress are:
www.justbbguns.co.uk/blog
www.ceramicaandstone.co.uk/blog
www.uneek-group.com/blog

…. and of course this one!

These don’t include the countless web sites we have on domains’ “beta” areas, where they are currently in testing and being built for clients.  We have one set right now that should be having a 50 web site roll out in 2015, all using WordPress alone!

If you have tried and have problems, don’t hesitate to contact us, as we might be able to help you.

Brand new layouts, responsive and zooming 150 150 Editor

Brand new layouts, responsive and zooming

Responsive Zooming imagery on Web Sites are improving for our customers.

We have been developing an exciting new project recently, and today we saw some results, with zooming.  Where Word Press has some amazing themes that makes zooming images do funky things and responsive movements on screen; 79DESIGN has recreated this zooming look, with far superior control over these movements, and positions.

Responsive Zooming Image web Site

While we really enjoy developing Word Press themes, there’s nothing quite like developing a custom web site, that looks BETTER than a theme.  Where the customer wants the zoom to be great, or lesser; where they want to have more images in a row; subtle changes that are a nightmare in a preset theme, are easy in a custom built web site.

That was our challenge, and we have been told the results so far, look “awesome”.  New layouts, genius design, and all responsive to mobiles too.

Blogging themes updated 150 150 Editor

Blogging themes updated

This week we have worked a lot on social media themes, with Blogs being the key upgrade.
The standard theme used for Word Press is ok, but not all that jazzy or modern. So a great many of the blogs we look after have had a revamp. From the seriously jazzy, where the images enlarge on hover, and scrolling news feeds at the top….. to the slightly more subtle yet no less information e-commerce web site blogs that need a good diary of information, dates and company news.

Working hard with external companies to get certain issues ironed out, has been a challenge, but the results are really rather cool.

Mobile web sites are the future – 79DESIGN really is embracing it 150 150 Editor

Mobile web sites are the future – 79DESIGN really is embracing it

Quite often we are finding tools to be built, or things that need to be done, that also need to be seen on mobile devices. And so often, this is not as easy as it sounds, as responsive web sites need you to be able to view the web design on your iPhone, Android or whatever, without scrolling left and right, or zooming. It should fit your mobile screen just right.

No one is perfect, and even we are still learning, but having never given up on these tasks, we really are perfecting how something looks on a mobile responsive web site, as well as a desktop web site.

Let us show you. We are not a company that blinds you with science or pushy sales people. We are just 79DESIGN, passionate about the work, and about giving you the best, at the best value for money. While being personal and supportive.

Happy Monday everyone.

Responsive Web Sites – as they should be built 150 150 Editor

Responsive Web Sites – as they should be built

At 79DESIGN we are always developmenting better ways to make a responsive web site on mobile, appear even better.

Even now, design companies build web sites that are not great on desktop, and on mobile they are even worse, because there are been little or no foresight into the users who will see these sites, leading customers to “pinch-zoom” each page.

We work differently. We build a web site so that it is responsive, so that it expands and contracts and shows off the menu and imagery at it’s best, no matter what device it’s viewed on.

Even now, we meet people who say their site is ok, but when we show them a responsive site, they say “goodness, I can read that”. This is how it should be. 79DESIGN builds web sites how they should be built.

We support you during and after completion.
